BECHDEL FILM FEST IN AKRON, OHIO
May 29 - June 2, 2019
Bechdel Film Fest, in partnership with the Nightlight Cinema and Akron Summit County Public Library, will feature high quality curated films that pass the “Bechdel Test,” which brings attention to gender inequality in film and fiction.
THE BECHDEL TEST: AT LEAST TWO FEMALE CHARACTERS, WHO ARE GIVEN NAMES, TALK TO EACH OTHER ABOUT SOMETHING OTHER THAN A MAN OR BOY.
Just half of films produced meet these simple requirements, and media aimed towards children and teens is even bleaker in terms of on-screen females with their own narrative arc. Exposing young Akronites to great art featuring women front and center can directly impact gender equality in future generations.
The downtown festival is an opportunity to showcase talented female screenwriters, directors, actors and highlight compelling stories of women, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community which are often overlooked on screen, and highlights Akron as the inclusive community that Akronites already know it to be.
Brit Charek, a High School English teacher, is an advocate for all-things Akron, gender equality, thoughtful writing and shopping local.
Brit is also a Founding Board Member of PechaKucha Akron and co-organizes The Midwest Craft Con, a biennial three-day retreat for crafters, makers and creative entrepreneurs.
At Bechdel Film Fest, Brit and her team are thrilled to tell the stories of women, people of color and the LGBTQ community.
Brit lives with her partner Mathias and two sons.
Joanna Wilson is a TV and film researcher/writer, specializing in Christmas entertainment. She also loves using her skills to help organize arts & culture groups in her hometown of Akron. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in Film Studies, she loves watching and talking about movies. She'll be glad to show you the LGBTQ filmmaker's portrait tattooed on her right shoulder.
Our Screening Committee Chair Jared McGrath has a long love of cinema and is thrilled to be working with the BFF team. In addition to his love of film, Jared can sometimes be found on stage. He is a member of the Cleveland based indie-pop band Bears (now hibernating), and has been seen in numerous musical productions throughout the region including Little Shop of Horrors, My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, City of Angels, The Drowsy Chaperone, and The Rocky Horror Show.
